Pro tip installing Linux on a new "windows 8" laptop - UEFI SecureBoot is probably turned on. Either turn off SecureBoot and turn on LegacyBoot, or use a distro that supports SecureBoot like Ubuntu 12.10 and above or the latest Fedora beta.
